School Choice Makes Milwaukee Stronger
Milwaukee offers parents more educational choices than any other American city. Today, 30 percent of Milwaukee students participate in School Choice programs.
The freedom to choose has produced positive results.
First, a study by a leading national expert indicates that graduation rates improve. This is crucial — high school graduation is a proxy for improved prospects in life.
Second, school choice leads to public school improvement. Harvard economist Caroline Hoxby found increases in test scores at Milwaukee public schools affected by choice. A Federal Reserve Bank economist reached similar conclusions.
Third, school choice leads to neighborhood renewal. When parents direct public funds to private and charter schools, successful educators are able to attract philanthropic investment – more than $128 million so far — to build or expand schools.
